Why is dance good for mental health?


Sabrina: Dance is great for mental health because it is holistic. There is mental, spiritual, and physical engagement when one dances.  It is stimulating, healing, and freeing.  One concentrates on the present moment, and you have to use your brain as well as your body in dance.  Dance is extremely venting so anger-fear-anxiety-worry-rage will dissipate, diminish, which is very good for everyone’s mental state.


What if I am shy and feel scared of starting to dance?


Sabrina: Something that I always say is, “Do it wrong until you get it right” and this applies to so many things, whether in dance class, in a studio, in the workplace, creating a business.  Yes, you’re going to be shy. You’re going to feel scared to start dancing. Let it be OK; move through it. You’re going to be nervous. You’re going to be self-conscious. It’s normal; that’s OK.  What is needed is consistency so take one class a week, take a few classes a week, dance everyday, whatever your circumstances allow financially and otherwise, do it consistently as best as you can, so you see results.  Feeling shy, scared, and nervous, no matter the age, is all part of the process so let that be OK.  Eventually your nerves, fear and shyness will subside.  It takes time and so allow that time and let it be ok.




Why do you like to dance?


Ari: I think it serves as a kind of somatic therapy experience where you are in charge of how you move and at what pace. The goal is safety, expression, movement through joy, healing, expansion. Dance is beautiful because I believe it’s inclusive and everyone can do it! I even started my own daily online beginner ballet classes where all are welcome!
